First off, I can't believe we are already to episode 20 of this podcast, so I want to say THANK YOU for being here! I'm proud of myself for doing the dang thing, because I'm truly committed to bringing you the information you actually need to hear, and filter out the rest of the BS that's in the health and fitness space. I want you to keep things simple, and do what matters, so you can reach your destination (aka your goals) as quickly as possible, and also be able to keep them for life.
Something I hear very often from the ladies I work with is that they’re wanting to tone and shape their bodies. They’re used to doing cardio, and they think cardio is what they need to do to reach their goals, but that’s just not the case. Weight training is essential if you’re wanting to change your body, and your health, and I’ve experienced this firsthand on my own journey over the last 13 years. Whether you’re a big fan of weight training, you’ve been intimidated to try it, or you’re somewhere in between, I’m excited to dive into this with you in more detail!
For example, I could easily put up fun HIIT and cardio-type workouts on my social media pages, and people would enjoy that. I'm not going to do that though, because I don't do those types of workouts to get the body that I have, and I want to maintain (I used to do running, but I know it wasn't going to help me reach my health and body goals); I consistently do weight training-based workouts now!
In today’s episode, I’m talking more about the many benefits of weight training that go beyond the ‘physical’ aspect (like your weight, how your clothes fit, etc.). Weight training can change your mindset, your confidence, your energy levels, and it can positively affect every part of your life. I've experienced the many benefits of weight training myself!
In today’s episode, I’m also covering 6 personal benefits I've experienced from weight training, which are:
- Building muscle has caused me to have more confidence
- Outgrowing my clothes became 'fun', because I was actually doing it on purpose to change my body
- I began to feed my body better so I could continue to grow and fuel my body
- I looked at my weight differently, and in a much more positive way
- I gained food freedom, because my relationship with food totally changed
- I've become a better example for my family (especially my two kids)
Lastly, I want to share a little more information with you when it comes to what your weekly weight training schedule can look like-especially if your goal(s) are fat loss with overall body transformation. If you can work out 5 days/week, I recommend doing a body part split-NOT a full body workout.
For example, you'll pick one day where you will work chest and back, and the next workout, you should do legs. Then, the next workout you could do shoulders and abs, and then your next workout could be legs again. The 5th and final workout for you that week would be biceps and triceps. Those are the overall body parts, and you don't have to do them just like I mentioned, but that's what I particularly love to do. You absolutely should have a day of rest for each body part in between, and not working out the same body part 2 days in a row (ex. don't do legs on Monday, and then do another leg workout on Tuesday).
If you can only work out three to four days a week, that is perfectly fine too! I would recommend that you do full body workouts instead though, so break down the body part categories above that I listed, and again, make sure to have a full day of rest in between (don't work the same body part 2 days in a row, because that will not help your muscles grow). You don't have to add in any kind of crazy cardio-I recommend adding in walks the other days of the week you're not doing a regular workout.
If you follow this type of plan consistently and don't change your workouts for at least 6 weeks, you will see the positive progress you are wanting!
I truly love creating these types of workout programs for my clients; they’re simple, enjoyable, and they keep them coming back for more because they’re actually seeing the results they want. Weight training has completely changed my life, and I know it can do the same for you!
