Podcast-ep. #19: Reverse dieting: what it is, and why it can work for you

We’ve gotten SO accustomed to hearing the word ‘diet’ in our culture today-everyone is always talking about some kind of diet, and someone you know (maybe that’s you) is constantly dieting. When you hear the term ‘reverse dieting’, you may feel a little scared, and think “how the heck can that even work”?! I’m really excited to dive into this topic that you may have heard of, but may not be super familiar with either.

It took me a long time to get realize I needed to do less cardio, burn less calories, and actually eat MORE calories, but that's what I model now, and what I live by. This is exactly what I teach my ladies too-going from undereating to overeating (which is something that is hard for them to understand), but most of the women who come to me for coaching think they're going to be overeating, but really, it's just their body at maintenance. That's really just what their body needs to be able to maintain the body that they actually want.

For example, if you're only eating around 1100 calories a day, you're more than likely under-eating (this is very common when I first start working with clients). If you're failing to fuel your body, you're failing to fuel your muscles for growth, and you won't be able to build the body and strength that you're looking for. You also will be wrecking your hormones and metabolism, your energy will be depleted, and so much more-literally everything is affected!

I want to hopefully teach you a better way and to change the game when it comes to all of this, and help you understand that reverse dieting isn't something to be afraid of; it's actually pretty powerful, and it can work for you.

In today’s episode, I’m talking about:

  • What reverse dieting really is, and why we have to get out of the ugly overeating-undereating cycle
  • Important warning signs to look for and things that will happen if you’re not eating enough food for your body
  • Why your body is so smart, and easily adapts to your habits overtime (aka it knows what’s coming, and what it needs to do to protect you)
  • Tips to help you start and follow a reverse diet that will actually work for you

Some of the benefits of reverse dieting are you will be eating MORE food (who doesn't want that, right?!), more energy, better moods, a healthier metabolism, and so much more. Reverse dieting can actually help you get to a point where you're not stressing about food all of the time, and you'll feel better not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. My personal goals were to truly change my body (I wanted to look different), I was really scared to eat more carbs (because I wasn't eating enough), and I thought I was going to get fat, or 'fluffy', but once I started gradually, and stayed consistent with the process, it all worked together well.

An important takeaway I really want you to have from this episode is if you’re choosing to consistently under-eat, you’re failing your body-it's as simple as that. Your metabolism will stay messed up (like I mentioned above-it's important after all), and you’ll never be able to build the body that you want. Your body doesn’t deserve to only ‘survive’, and stay in starvation mode-it deserves to thrive, and function at its best!

I hope this information about reverse dieting, and how it can look for you and your long-term health and fitness goals, resonated with you, and got you thinking outside of the box. This is a PROCESS (it’s definitely not a quick fix); while you can DIY this, it’s very helpful to have someone as a coach working with you, who has been there (yep, that’s me), and can help you reach your goals in a smart and sustainable way! I had a coach walking alongside me, teaching me, helping me, and it's why I decided to create my new 1-1 coaching program (it's basically the blueprint for what I did, and how I help my ladies get to the place they want with their goals as well).
