How to separate your fitness and nutrition and get out of the all or nothing mentality

If you’ve ever struggled with staying consistent in your health and fitness journey, chances are, you’ve been in that ‘all or nothing’ mentality at some time or another. I know I used to, and the majority of the ladies I work with at the beginning of their journey have as well. In order to get healthier, you’ve probably thought you have to focus on your fitness and nutrition at the same time, and if you mess up one, then the other totally goes out the window too. Sound familiar?

You hardly ever hear someone say, "I really need to get healthier, so I'm just going to start eating better".  Usually (almost always) it's actually "I really need to get healthier, so I'm going to start eating better and working out on Monday". There are some instances where eating more calories and workouts go together. Of course, I'm not ever going to deny the fact that your food and your workouts definitely do go together, but mentally, I need us to start viewing them differently when we're first getting started.

In today’s episode, I’m covering:

  • Learning to properly fuel your body with enough calories, whether you exercise or not

  • Understanding how calories and workouts are totally separate entities
  •  Why you should start viewing your workouts as something to sculpt and change your body (in addition to your nutrition), and not something you hate to do

  • Why certain apps (like MyFitnessPal) aren't always the best tool to use when you're starting on your health and fitness journey (specifically calculating your total calories goal)
  •  The importance of rest days in your health and fitness plan

It can be difficult to get out of this ‘all or nothing’ mindset, and mentally separate your fitness and nutrition. You don't instantly feel crap if something doesn't go as planned, like "I accidentally, you know, had some carbs for breakfast, so shoot, I've ruined my whole day!" You won't feel like that anymore, because you've begun to mentally separate the two. Maybe you're a little under or extra-fueled (depending on the day), and that's okay!

Trust me when I say-they do go hand in hand! If you start to consistently focus on one though, the other one will fall into place (almost naturally). You’ll start to have more control, your mindset will positively shift, and you’ll start making the progress you actually want with your health and fitness.
