Intermittent Fasting: My experience + how to know if it's right for you

This episode marks my 30th episode, and I am beyond excited to have you here with me-thank you for being here!!

Something I get asked about often is intermittent fasting, and if it’s something I recommend for my clients to be doing. Many ladies want to know if this will help them lose weight, and if it's simpler than tracking macros or counting calories-actually following a certain plan. It never really seems like anyone is wondering if it is truly healthy for them now, and for the future. I have my own thoughts on the topic because I’ve actually experienced it myself, and I want to help you decide if it’s right for you on your health and fitness journey.

I'll never share anything with you on my podcast that I haven't experienced myself, or I haven't helped my clients with (I wouldn't feel right doing otherwise). I also want you to know that you're never alone on this journey, and the struggles, hesitancies and questions you may be having are experienced by other ladies all of the time too!

In today’s episode, I’m talking about:

  • My introduction to intermittent fasting. I was having my own autoimmune issues and gut health issues several years ago, and intermittent fasting was recommended to me in regards to healing my gut. I actually did feel pretty well early on when I was doing intermittent fasting, but it slowly changed over time.
  • How my mindset changed the longer I was doing intermittent fasting. It turned into a mind game for me, and I became trapped in the 'all or nothing' mindset (I also see this happen a lot with my clients when it comes to getting off track, and their mindsets gradually changing). If you don't have the right coach or accountability in your life, it can be easy for a positive thing to turn into a negative thing, even if we started it with good intentions.
  • Really digging into WHY you’re wanting to pursue intermittent fasting, and if it makes sense for your health and fitness goals. I want you to think about your past history with intermittent fasting (if you've ever tried it), and if not, your past history with dieting. Why are you actually wanting to do this, and what are you hoping to gain from it?
  • Why intermittent fasting may work better for some people compared to others. Some people really thrive with rules and structure in place, and if that is you, that's awesome, and you should go for it! I've had clients say that intermittent fasting works well for them, and they don't want to change what they're doing.

Intermittent fasting: is it right for you?

I really want you to consider why you’re wanting to practice intermittent fasting, especially if you’ve been in that restrictive, ‘all or nothing’ mindset before. Are you wanting to do it in order to be healthier overall, or do you think it will be an ‘easier’ way for you to lose weight?

Honestly, it's so freeing to not live in the box of a certain diet, and only eat during certain hours of the day, off a list, etc. Once you understand that your body needs protein, carbs and fats to function well (and you can have any foods you want-like Oreos, which are my favorite), there's no way you'll want to go back. I've seen this work well for myself and my clients, so it's hard to want to go back to intermittent fasting, or any type of restrictive diet.

You may intend to start something with good intentions, but over time, your mindset can change, and it can turn into something negative. Intermittent fasting is definitely not a bad thing, but I want you to have the knowledge and be able to make the right decision for YOU and your health, for the long-term!
