Late-night snacking, eating out of boredom, mindless eating..if this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Overeating is something I’m sure you’ve struggled with before (I know I have). Maybe you’re restricting your calories during the day and telling yourself certain foods are ‘good’ or ‘bad’, and it leads you to feeling out of control around your favorite foods.
I know I used to struggle with overeating (especially the nighttime snacking), and sometimes I still do! When a client first comes on board to work with me, I ask a series of questions, as far as what has worked for them, what hasn't, what they've tried in the past, etc. When it comes to overeating, they feel like they don't know what to eat, and when it's late at night, they tend to grab a bag of chips (for example), and end up eating the whole thing. This is such a common thing that I hear very often.
The process I use to help my ladies understand overeating, and how to overcome it.
Inside my programs, we get the process going with macros and really understanding our bodies. We understand that overeating is a habit, and It's something that we do pretty mindlessly, and out of boredom.
No, you don't have to stay stuck in this restricting and binging cycle that isn’t beneficial (or necessary), so I’m excited to dive more into the juicy topic of overeating to help you, and give you more insight into why this may be happening!
In today’s episode, I’m talking about 4 tips to help you avoid overeating, which are:
- Your environment. This is crucial when it comes to setting yourself up for success long-term. I suggest not keeping your 'trigger' foods in your house at all if possible (especially if you are in a stricter 'dieting' phase-this isn't something you should feel like you need to do forever either, but if it is a struggle, just keep those foods and snacks out of there).
- Planning ahead and pre-logging your calories for the day. Knowing your calorie range is very important (not just for fat loss or muscle gain, but optimal bodily function daily). It's similar to budgeting your money, but instead, your budgeting your calories, and knowing your goals, amounts, etc. is a huge key to success.
- Give it 10 minutes to see if you really want that snack or treat that you're thinking about (this is a huge nighttime tip). You don't automatically need a snack in your hand when you sit down to watch your favorite show at night! You can also think about choosing a somewhat 'healthier' option that will still satisfy your craving.
- Just have the food you really want-it is okay to give into your cravings sometimes! It's not a huge deal if you end up going over your allotted calories for the day. It's also better to enjoy your treat instead of restricting and binging the next day, and continuing the cycle.
Making positive choices for your health is a constant battle, and overeating is one of those battles.
Choosing to prioritize your health is something you will do over and over-it’s not a ‘one and done’ decision that you make, and never have to worry about again. You also don’t have to feel stuck and in a constant dieting cycle when it comes to your nutrition!
You CAN have more flexibility and freedom with your food, and this is one of the biggest reasons why I love macro-counting, and am a huge advocate of this for my ladies. I’m all about simple and practical tips that you can do for life, and cutting through the BS when it comes to your health and fitness journey!
