When it comes to workout programs, how many have you started, and then quit? Or on the flip side, how many workout programs have you actually completed? Even if you did complete a workout program and loved the results you got, you may not have known what to do afterward to keep those results (this totally used to be me)!
Early on in my fitness journey, I really didn't know what I was doing, and I definitely wasn't thinking long-term when it came to my goals, or my results (especially on how to maintain them). A super important part of the puzzle when it comes to your fitness journey is really looking at things from a different perspective.
I’ve found that half of the battle with your fitness journey IS finding a workout program that you can stick with, and also gives you optimal results you can maintain for more than 21 or 30 days. Whether you're picking out a certain program with a coach or personal trainer, or you're just doing something by yourself, you really want to think about something that is going to fit with your lifestyle AND get you the body that you want. This is exactly what I want to help you with, and dive into in more detail.
In today’s episode, I’m talking about 4 things you should look for in a workout program that you can stick to, which are:
- The workout program needs to be slow, steady and long in duration. A short-term program will create short-term results, so it's important to start thinking long-term.
- You have to actually enjoy the workout program. Even if it's something you haven't tried before, you shouldn't discount it without least trying it, and giving yourself some time (and some grace).
- The workout program has to deliver the results that you want. Of course you should enjoy what you're doing, but if what you're doing isn't giving you the positive results you're looking for when it comes to your body and your health, it's not the best option for you.
- The workout program has to be realistic long-term.You're going to be doing these workouts for a long time (you need to give them at least 3 months before you change anything up honestly). Your workouts should not be super overcomplicated, and you should not be doing moves that you don’t understand; you really should be able to do the moves in your workouts as you age.
If you can't stick to your workout program for more than 21 or 30 days, there really is no point in starting it in the first place.
It's okay if you're seeing results very slowly from the workout program that you're doing (remember-slow and steady, and long-term here!) It may take some time to get used to doing something new (like if you're lifting weights for the first time and you're unsure about some of the moves, your form, etc.), but you may come to love it.
You should also still be incorporating other types of exercise that you love, like dancing, yoga, running, swimming, or biking-the options are endless! You really want to find a workout program that is a great baseline for you through any season of life, and you're still able to see results from it.
When I was first beginning my fitness journey over 13 years ago, I never even considered how I would be able to maintain any results I achieved for life, so I just hopped from program to program. I finally learned a better way (keeping things simple, but not boring), and I love helping my clients with this now too.
Ultimately, I want you to get your eyes off of all the shiny objects, and start thinking about what you want your health to look like for the long-term. Find workouts that can just become a part of YOUR daily routine that you will enjoy-you won’t regret it!
