Something I hear often from the ladies I work with is that they struggle going to the gym, and when they do, they don’t feel confident being there. While I normally work out at home, I do go to the gym when I’m traveling, and I’ve struggled with these same feelings too!
I’m excited to provide some helpful tips if you do prefer going to the gym, and you want to really enjoy being able to do so.
In today’s episode, I’m sharing 11 tips to help you feel more confident in the gym, which are:
- Hire a personal trainer to help you (at least when you're first starting out in the gym).
- Go with an experienced friend (someone who regularly goes to the gym and knows what they're doing when it comes to workouts).
- Go with an inexperienced friend (this can be fun because you're both in the same boat, and can tackle your fear of going to the gym together!)
- Ask for a tour of the gym, machines, how to use everything, etc. This should be offered at most gyms, but in case it's not, you should definitely ask for it.
- Go online and research HOW to use the equipment before you go to the gym (plenty of tutorials on Pinterest and YouTube to help you)
- Purchase a program to use and follow when you're working out in the gym. All of my programs can be done at home or in a gym, and I know my ladies love having a plan to follow, no matter where they're working out.
- Know and understand that everyone in the gym is there, trying to better and improve themselves.
- Remember that EVERYONE in the gym was a beginner, and was in your shoes at some point (ex. when it comes to not feeling confident and worrying about other people judging them when they're there).
- Don't be afraid to ask for help from other people who are working out in the gym (what equipment to use, how to use the equipment, etc.)
- Make the decision to JUST.DO.IT. Put your head down, get in, get your workout done, and get on with your day!
- This isn't about other people in the gym-it's about YOU (your mindset, your belief in yourself, your confidence, etc.)
My ladies who are regular gym-goers helped me with some of these tips, and they were happy to share their best advice for going to the gym-I’m thankful they did! Honestly, this really comes down to your mindset; you have to remember that everyone in the gym is a beginner at one point, and everyone there is just trying to better themselves.
Ultimately, I want to encourage you to get your body moving. If that means going to the gym, then that's great, but you need to make it a priority, and not stress about what other people may think of you in the gym. Find what kind of workout plan and environment works best for YOU and your goals-especially long-term!
